Member of the of the International Ravensbrück Committee,

President of “Anima Fori” Association

Between 14 and 19 April 2015, the Land Brandenburg hosted events dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Women’s Concentration Camp in Ravensbrück. The reunion of the International Ravensbrück Committee was held by Sabine Kunst, Ph.D., Minister of Science, Research and Culture in Brandenburg, Gunther Morsch, Ph. D., head of the Ravensbrück Memorial Foundation and Insa Enschebach, Ph. D., executive director of the Ravensbrück Memorial Site.

The Committee is led and composed of former deportees, their offspring and sympathizers. For more than two decades, it has been led by Dr. Anette Chalut, who was deported to Ravensbrück on May the 13th, 1944 and later to a Kommando in Hannover-Limmer belonging to Bergen Belsen concentration camp. In 2015, leadership of the Ravensbrück Committee passed on to the eminent lawyer Eva Bäckerova, Ph. D., deported to Ravensbrück at age 4 together with her parents, and later to Bergen Belsen. “Transmitting our memory in schools and universities, on the radio and television, said Mrs. Anette Chalut, is of great importance to the former deportees of Ravensbrück.”

On the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Ravensbrück Concentration Camp, in April 2015, the surviving deportees addressed this message to future generations, from which we quote an excerpt: “We, the deportees, are transmitting our vivid memories from the camp. These memories must not vanish together with us. Our role is to pass the memories on, despite the passage of time, so that they can act as a warning to future generations. Our children must continue our efforts. We ask young people to carry on our struggle against Nazi ideology, for a world of justice and tolerance in which anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia and right-wing extremism will no longer find a place.

The call of women from Ravensbrück is the call of all women in the world, expressed toward peace and freedom. Wars have not disappeared from world history and are still very painful. Our resistance against ultra-nationalism and Fascism must continue. People around the world must hear our cry: never Fascism, never war, never another Ravensbrück!”

Nowadays, as Neo-Nazi rallies spread across Europe once again, together with all Committees of former concentration camp deportees we should launch an appeal for the organization of a World Congress to study and combat Neo-Nazi movements. We would welcome this act given that in May 2016 Romania will take over the Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
